Their Story

Darryn Deen Andrews was a 34-year-old second lieutenant from Dallas, Texas. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his unit had reportedly conducted training and security missions in other locations, including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On September 4, 2009, Andrews was part of a dismounted patrol on a road known as Route Dodge in the Yahya Khail District of Afghanistan's Paktika Province. According to U.S. military reports, the patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast killed Andrews and another soldier, Specialist John C. Bishop. A third soldier was wounded in the incident.

Andrews's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban. The Yahya Khail District, where Andrews died, was a known area of insurgent activity in eastern Afghanistan.

Following his death, Andrews was posthumously promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He was survived by his parents and a sister. A memorial service was held at Fort Richardson, and his name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the base.

First Lieutenant Andrews is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Richardson and on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in his hometown of Dallas. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
