John Edward Andrade Sr. was a 19-year-old from San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Private First Class with Company I, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, a unit based in Vilseck, Germany, and deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 7, 2010, Andrade was killed in Der Khak Chupan Turah, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident involving an improvised explosive device (IED).
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. In mid-2010, U.S. and allied forces launched a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, focusing on clearing districts like Zhari. The use of IEDs by insurgent forces was the leading cause of coalition casualties at the time.
Andrade's death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His family in San Antonio was notified of his death.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the San Antonio National Cemetery.
