U.S. Army Specialist Mabry James Anders, 21, of Baker City, Oregon, died on August 27, 2012, in Kalagush, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Mabry James Anders was a 21-year-old from Baker City, Oregon. He served as an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
On August 27, 2012, Specialist Anders was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Kalagush district of Afghanistan's Nuristan province. He was part of a unit engaged in combat operations in the region at the time.
Anders died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces and the Afghan government fighting Taliban insurgents and other militant groups.
Following his death, the Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His body was returned to Oregon for burial.
He is remembered on memorials in Oregon and Colorado. His name is inscribed on Panel 28W, Line 48 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Oregon Veterans Home and on a memorial at Fort Carson.
