Their Story
William Madden Amundson Jr. was a 21-year-old soldier from The Woodlands, Texas. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army's elite 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Fort Benning, Georgia.
On October 18, 2004, Amundson was killed during a combat operation in Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire in the vicinity of Kandahar.
Amundson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation's initial objective was to dismantle the al-Qaeda terrorist network and remove the Taliban regime from power in Afghanistan.
Following his death, Amundson was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Texas, where he was buried with military honors.
Corporal Amundson is memorialized on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in The Woodlands and on the Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning. His name is also inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 124 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
