Staff Sergeant Nicanor Iv Amper was a 36-year-old soldier from San Jose, California. He served with Troop A, 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, a unit based at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

On July 5, 2011, Amper died in Shemal District, Zabul province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.

Amper's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

The Department of Defense announced his death on July 7, 2011. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan over the July 4th holiday period that year, according to contemporary news reports.
