Their Story
Jason Gil Amores was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was from Lehigh Acres, Florida, and served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 2.
Amores died on January 20, 2011, in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile fire. His battalion was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the Sangin district, an area known for intense fighting and a high concentration of improvised explosive devices.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a major focus on securing population centers in the south, like Helmand, from Taliban influence. The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines sustained significant casualties during its deployment to Sangin.
Amores was one of two Marines from his battalion killed on the same day. The Marine Corps announced the deaths, and his body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held at Camp Pendleton, and he was buried with full military honors.
