Their Story

Matthew Ryan Ammerman was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On December 3, 2014, Ammerman was killed in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire while his unit was conducting operations. He was 29 years old.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation was in its final stages, with U.S. and NATO forces transitioning to a non-combat role. The conflict formally concluded in December 2014, the month of Ammerman's death.

Following his death, the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) honored his service. A memorial was reportedly held at his home base in Florida. His body was returned to Indiana, where he was buried with military honors.
