Their Story
Christopher Michael Allgaier was a Chief Warrant Officer 3 serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 33-year-old pilot was from Middleton, Wisconsin.
On May 30, 2007, Allgaier was piloting a CH-47 Chinook helicopter on a mission in Helmand Province. The aircraft was reportedly struck by enemy fire in the Upper Sangin Valley near a landing zone known as LZ Stella. The helicopter crashed, killing Allgaier and four other U.S. service members aboard.
The incident occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. By 2007, Taliban forces had regrouped and were mounting a significant insurgency, particularly in Helmand Province. The Sangin Valley was a known insurgent stronghold and a focal point for coalition operations.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced the casualties on May 31, 2007. Allgaier's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Wisconsin.
Allgaier was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal for his service. He is remembered on memorials in Wisconsin and at Fort Bragg.
