Their Story
Thomas Craig Allers was born on February 2, 1988, and grew up in Plainwell, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The unit, known as the 'Wolfhounds,' deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On May 23, 2011, Allers was killed by enemy small arms fire while on guard duty at Forward Operating Base Bostick in Kunar Province, eastern Afghanistan. The base, located in a volatile region near the Pakistan border, was frequently targeted by insurgent attacks. The Department of Defense confirmed his death the following day.
Allers's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Afghanistan War, a conflict that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in a major counterinsurgency campaign, with eastern provinces like Kunar being significant areas of operation and frequent combat.
His body was returned to Michigan, where he was buried with military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported on his funeral, noting his family's grief and his reputation as a dedicated soldier. His high school in Plainwell also held a moment of silence in his memory.
PFC Allers was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial.
