Their Story
Nekl Bruce Allen was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. He was 29 years old and from Rochester, New York.
On September 12, 2009, Allen was killed while on patrol in the Shah District of Kunar Province, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan. The patrol was traveling on a road known as Route Ferrari when it was struck by an improvised explosive device. The blast also killed another soldier, Specialist Jonathan D. Welch, and injured several others.
Allen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations in volatile eastern provinces like Kunar. Route Ferrari was a known danger zone for IED attacks.
Allen's death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
He is remembered on memorials at Fort Drum and in his hometown. His name is inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 105 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
