Allen, Justin Bradley

Justin Bradley Allen was a 23-year-old from the small community of Coal Grove, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Army and served as a sergeant assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a special operations light infantry unit.

On July 18, 2010, Sergeant Allen was killed during a combat operation in the volatile Zhari district of Kandahar province, a region considered a Taliban stronghold. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.

Allen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, the conflict was marked by a major coalition offensive in Kandahar, with U.S. and allied forces conducting clearing operations in districts like Zhari to disrupt insurgent networks.

His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. The Department of Defense officially announced his death, and his hometown held memorial services. His family and community in Ohio publicly mourned his loss.

Sergeant Allen was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his regiment. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
