Their Story
Leroy Edward Alexander was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The unit was part of Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan. Alexander had deployed on multiple missions, including to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 3, 2005, Alexander was killed in Orgun-E, a district in Afghanistan's Paktika province near the Pakistani border. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) during a convoy operation. The attack was recorded as a hostile action.
Alexander's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2005, the conflict was characterized by a resurgence of insurgent activity, with frequent IED attacks against coalition forces in the country's eastern and southern provinces.
Following his death, Alexander was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and two children. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.
Alexander is listed on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
