Erica Paige Alecksen was a 21-year-old specialist from Putnami, Georgia, serving in the U.S. Army. She was assigned to the 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, based out of Fort Bliss, Texas.
On July 8, 2012, Specialist Alecksen died in Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated her death was the result of hostile enemy action. According to reports, she was killed by indirect fire, a term often used for mortar or rocket attacks, while on a forward operating base.
Her death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with international forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.
The Department of Defense announced her death on July 9, 2012. Her body was returned to the United States, and she was buried with military honors in her home state of Georgia. Her unit and community held memorial services.
