Raymond Chavez Alcaraz Jr. was born in Redlands, California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with Company C, 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based in Bamberg, Germany. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 31, 2010, Sergeant Alcaraz was at Forward Operating Base Shank, a major base in Logar Province. The Department of Defense announced he died of wounds sustained from hostile enemy fire. The base, which included a combat support hospital (C-MED), was a frequent target of insurgent rocket and mortar attacks.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, marked by a surge of U.S. troops and a high tempo of combat operations against Taliban and other insurgent forces.
