Jesse Wayne Ainsworth was a 24-year-old Staff Sergeant from Dayton, Texas. He served in Troop C, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On July 10, 2010, Ainsworth was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in rugged terrain approximately four to five kilometers from the village of Walakan in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The area was known for insurgent activity.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The summer of 2010 saw a significant surge in U.S. troop levels, with forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in eastern provinces like Paktika.
According to military releases, Ainsworth was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to Texas for burial.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on the Dayton Veterans Memorial in his hometown.
