Their Story

Shane Hasan Ahmed was a 31-year-old American soldier from Bedford, Michigan. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. According to the Department of Defense, his military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

Ahmed died on November 14, 2010, in Watapur District, a rugged area in eastern Afghanistan's Konar province. The Pentagon reported his death as the result of a hostile incident. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in separate attacks in eastern Afghanistan that day.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Konar along the border with Pakistan.

The Department of Defense officially announced Ahmed's death on November 15, 2010. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Specialist. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

Shane Hasan Ahmed is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the 1st Brigade Combat Team memorial at Fort Campbell.
