Sgt. Amaru Aguilar, 26, of Miami, Florida, was a U.S. Army cavalry scout. He died on May 13, 2011, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Amaru Aguilar was from Miami, Florida. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop A, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Aguilar died on May 13, 2011, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol. The incident occurred in the Zhari district, a known insurgent stronghold southwest of Kandahar city.
Aguilar's death came during a period of intense fighting following the 2009-2010 U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. The mission of his unit, part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), was focused on clearing insurgents from key districts in Kandahar, the Taliban's historical heartland.
The Department of Defense announced his death on May 16, 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
Sgt. Aguilar is remembered by his unit and family. His name is inscribed on Panel 31E, Line 15 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on local memorials in Florida and Kansas.
