U.S. Army Specialist Trevor Brandon Adkins, 21, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, died on July 9, 2012, in Maidan Shahr, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Trevor Brandon Adkins was a 21-year-old soldier from Spring Lake, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army's 978th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, part of Combined Joint Task Force-1 (Task Force Gauntlet).
On July 9, 2012, Adkins was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak province, southwest of Kabul. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he died while conducting a dismounted patrol.
Adkins was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Wardak province, a key insurgent transit route, as international forces worked to train Afghan security units ahead of a planned transition.
His body was returned to North Carolina, where he was buried with military honors at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
He is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Spring Lake and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the North Carolina Veterans Park. His name is inscribed on Panel 30W, Line 37 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
