Ryan Christopher Adams was a 26-year-old sergeant from Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He served with the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 951st Engineer Company, based in Tomahawk.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Adams died on October 2, 2009, in Logar Province, Afghanistan. He was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device (IED) and small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.
Adams's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations, with IEDs being a primary cause of casualties for coalition forces.
