Captain Clayton Lee Adamkavicius, 43, of Fairdale, Kentucky, was a U.S. Army National Guard officer killed in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, on April 21, 2006.
Their Story
Clayton Lee Adamkavicius was a 43-year-old captain from Fairdale, Kentucky, serving with the Kentucky Army National Guard. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 149th Brigade, 35th Infantry Division, based in Louisville.
On April 21, 2006, Adamkavicius was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol in the Tirin Kot district of Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. He was part of a team training Afghan National Army soldiers at the time of the attack.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on combating Taliban and al-Qaeda forces and training Afghan security units.
According to the Department of Defense, Adamkavicius was the 248th U.S. service member to die in Afghanistan since 2001. His body was returned to Kentucky, where he was buried with military honors.
Adamkavicius was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Kentucky Veterans Memorial and the National Guard Memorial in Washington, D.C.
