Staff Sergeant Omar Aceves was a 30-year-old soldier from El Paso, Texas. He served with the 693rd Engineer Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Drum, New York. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On January 12, 2011, Aceves was killed in the Gelan district of Afghanistan's Ghazni Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.
Aceves died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
