Their Story
Aaron Seth Aamot was a 22-year-old soldier from Custer, Washington. He served as a Specialist in Company C, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
On November 5, 2009, Aamot was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in the village of Jelewar, located in the Arghandab District of Kandahar Province. The blast also wounded another soldier.
Aamot's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. The U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001, saw a major troop surge in 2009, with forces engaging in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in Taliban strongholds like Kandahar.
Following his death, Aamot was posthumously promoted to the rank of Specialist. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A memorial service was held at Fort Lewis, and he was buried with military honors.
He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Lewis and within his community. The 5th Stryker Brigade completed its deployment in mid-2010, having suffered significant casualties during its tour.
