Zuciya Bata Da Kashi Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel English Translation

Around midnight, Hanifa could not sleep. Her mind was filled only with thoughts of her beloved. The journey he was about to make felt to her as if they had already separated forever.

Slowly, her thoughts returned to the beginning of their first meeting, about one year earlier.

It was around 9:30 p.m. on a Thursday night. Hanifa was standing by the roadside at Bata, waiting for a vehicle that would take her to Murtala Hospital area. From there, she would enter another vehicle going to their neighborhood.

She had been waiting for almost thirty minutes, searching for a Hiace bus because she was very afraid of entering a tricycle, especially at that time of night. But it was as if the vehicles had agreed not to come. Whenever a Hiace arrived, it was already full.

She became extremely tired. Fear began to grip her as she noticed people gradually leaving the roadside.

What frightened her most was the scolding she would receive from her father. He hated seeing them outside after Maghrib, let alone at this late hour when the road had almost become empty.

The only things passing were private cars moving one after another.

The distance from Bata to their neighborhood in Mandawari, through the Yar Mai Shinkafi road, was not something she could easily walk. It was not even the distance that worried her most, but the extra time it would waste before she reached home.

So she decided it was better to keep waiting, hoping that Allah would bring a vehicle that would take her home early.

Why Hanifa Went Out Late

She remembered the reason she had gone out so late.

That evening, around five o’clock, she left their house to visit her friend, or rather her close sister, Huwailat. They had been close since the beginning of secondary school, about five years earlier.

Huwailat lived at Yankaba, and Hanifa had gone there to check on her because of the illness she had been suffering from.

When Hanifa arrived, she found that Huwailat was feeling better. Huwailat even promised that she would return to school the following week.

Hanifa had expected that two hours would be enough for her to go and return. But she did not reach Huwailat’s house until around six o’clock.

She wanted to return immediately, but Huwailat’s mother, Ummi, asked her to wait until the driver returned so he could take her home. Hanifa could not refuse because of the respect she had for her.

So she sat down, though unwillingly, until around 8:30 p.m. before the driver returned. Unfortunately, he returned without the car because it had broken down on the way home.

At that point, Ummi had no choice but to allow Hanifa to leave.

It took Hanifa about twenty minutes before she found a vehicle to Bata. When she reached Bata, she stood there for at least thirty minutes.

She released a sigh and hissed in frustration because she had still not found a vehicle.

The Frightening Encounter

Without noticing, she suddenly felt someone pulling her veil.

In fear, she turned around and saw a young man who looked drunk.

She frowned and said, “What is it, Mallam?”

In the slurred speech of someone under the influence, he said he wanted to talk to her.

She hissed.

At that same moment, a car passed by, moved ahead, then reversed and came back.

Before she could understand what was happening, three men surrounded her. From their appearance, it was clear that they were not trustworthy people.

Hanifa became even more frightened. The road had very few people, and most of them were simply passing by.

She did not know what to do. She began looking for a way to escape.

Then she saw a young man come out of the car and walk toward them.

He stopped close to them and said, “Is everything alright? Why are you surrounding someone’s daughter like this?”

They replied, “Everything is fine. Go away and leave us alone.”

He tried persuading them to let her go, but they refused.

He realized that there was no way he could overpower them physically. Even if he tried to forcefully rescue her, he would not succeed.

So he changed his approach.

He brought out three five-hundred-naira notes and said, “Here, take this and buy yourselves drinks.”

Immediately, they collected the money, praising him as “Oga,” and left.

Hanifa released a deep sigh. Fear had almost swallowed her completely. If Allah had not brought this young man to rescue her, she did not know what would have happened.

He looked at her and said, “Please be patient. Society has become corrupt. All we can do is pray.”

She replied quietly, “Hmm,” with her head lowered.

He asked, “Will you come so I can reduce the distance for you?”

She shook her head and said, “Thank you for the help you have already given me.”

He said, “Do you expect me to leave you here in this condition? Look at this place. It is not proper for a respectable girl like you to stand here at this time of night. Come, let us go. I will not harm you, by Allah. I only intend to help you.”

Hanifa realized that she had no better option. She herself knew that remaining there was dangerous. Besides, the young man did not look like a bad person.

Inside the Car

They drove off, with Hanifa sitting beside him in the car.

Since the moment she entered, she kept her head lowered, thinking about the scolding she would receive from her father.

She hated that kind of scolding. To her, she would rather be beaten than listen to the long lecture he would give her. Worse still, she knew she had also brought trouble to her mother.

The young man glanced at her from the corner of his eye and saw tears falling from her eyes.

He said, “Stop crying. They did not do anything to you, did they?”

She replied, “No.”

He asked, “Then why are you crying?”

Surprisingly, she found herself explaining what was in her heart: the fear of the condition in which she would meet her father at home.

He said, “Well, your father is right. Every responsible father must discipline his children properly. But insha Allah, nothing will happen to you.”

When they reached Mandawari, he asked, “Which road should we take?”

She showed him the road that passed by Aminu Ado’s house. They continued moving as she directed him until they reached their neighborhood, Yar Mai Shinkafi.

Even though it was night, he admired the arrangement of the area. It looked peaceful and well-planned, almost as if it was not inside the main city.

Deep down, he liked the neighborhood very much.
