Their Story
Jeffrey Allen Williams was a 20-year-old soldier from Warrenville, Illinois. He served as a medic in Medical Troop, Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. The unit deployed to Iraq as part of Task Force Victory.
On September 5, 2005, Williams was killed in Tal Afar, a city in Iraq's restive Nineveh Province. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained during a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not widely reported, but the area was a known insurgent stronghold.
Williams's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a major combat phase of the U.S.-led war in Iraq that began in March 2003. By late 2005, U.S. and Iraqi forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in western Iraq. The 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment was heavily involved in the Second Battle of Tal Afar, a major offensive to clear the city of insurgent forces that ran from August to September 2005.
