Williams, Eugene

Eugene Williams was a 24-year-old sergeant from Highland, New York, serving with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He was deployed to the Persian Gulf region in early 2003 as part of the U.S. military buildup for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On March 29, 2003, during the initial invasion phase, Williams was killed in the vicinity of Objective Raider, a military designation for an area near the city of Najaf. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile fire. Media reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in combat operations to secure bridges over the Euphrates River in the region.

Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 20, 2003, with a U.S.-led coalition invasion to overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein. The early campaign involved rapid armored advances toward Baghdad, with intense fighting occurring at river crossings and urban centers like Najaf in late March.

The Department of Defense announced Williams's death on March 31, 2003. He was among the first American service members killed after the ground invasion began. His death was reported by several national news outlets, including The New York Times, which listed him among the casualties of that period.

Sergeant Williams is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial at the Highland Falls Veterans Park in his hometown. His name is also inscribed on Panel 1W, Row 012 of the Iraq War Memorial in Washington, D.C., which honors U.S. personnel who died in the conflict.
