Sgt. David Blakeley Williams, 26, of Tarboro, North Carolina, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier killed in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 22, 2008.
Their Story
David Blakeley Williams was a 26-year-old sergeant from Tarboro, North Carolina. He served with the 1132nd Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, a North Carolina Army National Guard unit based in Rocky Mount.
Williams died on March 22, 2008, in Baghdad, Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device while on patrol. The attack occurred in the Rusafa district of eastern Baghdad.
His death came during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2008, the war had entered a phase characterized by counterinsurgency operations and persistent attacks using IEDs against coalition and Iraqi forces.
The Pentagon announced his death four days after the incident. His body was returned to North Carolina, where he was buried with military honors. His unit, the 1132nd MP Company, had been deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2007.
Williams was one of more than 4,400 U.S. service members who died during the war. He is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes of North Carolina monument in Raleigh and on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial online.
