U.S. Army Sergeant Clint Elree Williams, 24, of Kingston, Oklahoma, died on September 14, 2006, in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Clint Elree Williams was born on March 28, 1982, in Kingston, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas. He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Sergeant Williams was killed on September 14, 2006, in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit encountered enemy small arms fire during combat operations.
Williams died during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq. The February 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra had escalated attacks between Sunni and Shia militias. The years 2005-2007 were the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians.
Williams was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
He is remembered on memorials in his hometown of Kingston and at Fort Hood. His name is inscribed on Panel 21R, Line 58 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
