Christian Bautista Williams was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Delta Company, 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based out of Twentynine Palms, California. He was from Winter Haven, Florida, and was 27 years old at the time of his death.
According to official Department of Defense casualty records, Sgt. Williams died on July 29, 2006, in Rawah, Iraq. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile action. Rawah is a town in the volatile Al Anbar province, where U.S. forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Sunni militant groups, including Al-Qaeda in Iraq.
Williams was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period marked by intense sectarian violence and insurgency. The years 2005 to 2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, with frequent attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), small arms fire, and rocket-propelled grenades.
