Williams, Austin Thomas

Austin Thomas Williams was a 22-year-old sailor from Freeport, Maine. He served as a Petty Officer Second Class in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sentry (MCM-3), a mine countermeasures ship.

According to U.S. Navy statements, Williams died on April 5, 2018, in Juffair, Bahrain. Juffair is a suburb of Manama that hosts a major U.S. naval base, Naval Support Activity Bahrain. The Navy stated his death was not the result of hostile action, but occurred while he was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led coalition military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014 following the group's seizure of large territories, including the city of Mosul. The operation involved coalition forces conducting airstrikes, training local partners, and providing logistical and naval support from locations across the Middle East, including Bahrain.

The Navy announced Williams's death on April 6, 2018. His remains were returned to the United States. An investigation into the precise circumstances of his death was conducted by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), though its findings were not made public.

Williams was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He is remembered by his shipmates and community as a dedicated sailor. His name is listed on the Navy Memorial's roll of honor.
