Andre Lewis Williams, a 23-year-old Marine corporal from Galloway, Ohio, died on July 28, 2005, in Cykla Village, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Corporal Andre Lewis Williams was a Marine reservist assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, based in Columbus, Ohio. The unit, part of the 4th Marine Division, was mobilized for service in Iraq. Williams was from Galloway, a suburb of Columbus.
On July 28, 2005, Williams was killed by hostile fire in Cykla Village, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. According to military reports, his unit was conducting combat operations in the area at the time of his death. He was 23 years old.
Williams's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2005, the war had evolved into a protracted counterinsurgency campaign, with significant combat occurring in western Anbar province, a stronghold for Sunni insurgent and extremist groups.
In the aftermath of his death, Williams was remembered in his Ohio community. His name is inscribed on the Lima Company Memorial in Columbus, which honors the 23 members of the battalion killed during its 2005 deployment. The battalion sustained heavy casualties that summer, particularly in the city of Haditha.
Corporal Williams was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is listed on the Iraq War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and his service is documented in the Defense Department's casualty records and by veteran memorial organizations.
