David Anthony Wilkey Jr. was from Elkhart, Indiana. He joined the U.S. Army and was assigned as a Private First Class to Company C, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Wilkey died on June 18, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile fire. No further specifics about the incident were publicly released.
Wilkey's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq, following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces, with high casualty rates from improvised explosive devices and direct combat in Baghdad and surrounding areas.
