Wilfong, Joshua Shane
Cpl. Joshua Shane Wilfong, a 22-year-old U.S. Marine from Walker, West Virginia, was killed in hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar province on April 30, 2004.
Their Story
Joshua Shane Wilfong was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He was from Walker, West Virginia, and served with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. At the time of his death, his unit was attached to the 1st Marine Division.
On April 30, 2004, Cpl. Wilfong died from hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar province. According to the Defense Department, he was killed during a firefight with insurgents. The Marine Corps reported that the engagement occurred while his unit was conducting security and stabilization operations.
Wilfong's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By April 2004, U.S. forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the Sunni-majority Anbar province, a center of armed opposition to the coalition presence.
Following his death, Cpl. Wilfong was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in the Pineview Cemetery in Orma, West Virginia. The Department of Defense officially notified his family of his death on May 2, 2004.
He is remembered on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's online 'Wall of Faces' and in local memorials in West Virginia. His name is inscribed on Panel 1W, Row 022 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Bakersfield, California.
