Their Story

Carlos E. Iv Wilcox grew up in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army National Guard, assigned to the 34th Military Police Company based in Stillwater, Minnesota.

On July 16, 2009, Specialist Wilcox was killed in Basrah, Iraq. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle.

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2009, U.S. forces were in a period of transition, having transferred security responsibility for urban areas like Basrah to Iraqi forces earlier that year, though American troops remained in support and training roles.

The Minnesota National Guard confirmed his death. Governor Tim Pawlenty ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor. He was survived by his wife and other family members.

Wilcox was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Minnesota Fallen Military Heroes Memorial at the State Capitol.
