U.S. Army Specialist Michael Joseph Wiesemann, 20, of North Judson, Indiana, was killed in action on May 29, 2004, in Quyarrah, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Michael Joseph Wiesemann was a 20-year-old from North Judson, Indiana. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop C, 1st Battalion, 14th Armored Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
On May 29, 2004, Wiesemann was killed in Quyarrah, a town in Iraq's Nineveh Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died from injuries sustained when his unit's patrol came under enemy small arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2004, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to a counterinsurgency and stabilization effort, with frequent attacks against coalition forces.
Wiesemann's death was reported by the Department of Defense on June 1, 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Indiana for burial.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is listed on the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which honors soldiers from the Stryker brigade who died in Iraq.
