Their Story
Jeffrey Louis Wiener was a 31-year-old Petty Officer Second Class from Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the U.S. Navy serving with the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, at the time of his deployment to Iraq.
On May 7, 2005, Wiener was killed during a hostile incident in the city of Hadithah, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from wounds sustained during enemy action. No further operational details of the incident were publicly released.
His death occurred during a period of intense and escalating violence in the Iraq War, two years after the initial invasion. The years 2005-2007 were among the deadliest for U.S. forces, marked by a potent insurgency and, later, widespread sectarian conflict following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari shrine.
Wiener's death was reported by national and local news outlets, including his hometown newspaper. He was survived by family members in Kentucky. The Navy posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart medal.
Jeffrey Wiener is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in Louisville and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 09, Row 118 of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.
