U.S. Army Specialist Lee Allen Wiegand, 20, of Hallstead, Pennsylvania, was killed in a hostile incident in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on September 28, 2005.

Their Story

Lee Allen Wiegand was a 20-year-old soldier from Hallstead, Pennsylvania. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, part of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard based in Williamsport. The unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force during its deployment to Iraq.

On September 28, 2005, Wiegand was killed in Ar Ramadi, a city in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The Department of Defense announced he died from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2005, the war had entered a phase of intense insurgency, with frequent attacks against coalition forces in cities like Ramadi.

Following his death, Wiegand was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown, where he was remembered by community members and fellow soldiers.

Wiegand is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and in local tributes in Pennsylvania. His name is listed on the 109th Infantry Regiment's memorial at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard training site.
