U.S. Marine Corporal Donte Jamal Whitworth, 21, of Noblesville, Indiana, was killed in action on February 28, 2009, at Camp Al Taqaddum, Iraq.
Their Story
Donte Jamal Whitworth was born on July 12, 1987, and grew up in Noblesville, Indiana. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Corporal with Combat Logistics Company 16, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, before deploying to Iraq.
On February 28, 2009, Corporal Whitworth was killed while conducting combat operations at Camp Al Taqaddum, a major U.S. military logistics hub in Anbar Province, west of Baghdad. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. No further details regarding the specific incident were publicly released.
Whitworth's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began with an invasion in March 2003. By early 2009, the conflict had entered a phase characterized by a sustained U.S. troop presence and counterinsurgency operations, following the peak of violence during the preceding years.
