Lance Corporal William Wayne White, 24, of Brooklyn, New York, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Iraq on March 29, 2003, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
William Wayne White was a 24-year-old from Brooklyn, New York. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
White was killed in action on March 29, 2003, during combat operations in Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while his unit was conducting a mission near An Nasiriyah. The incident occurred during the initial invasion phase of the war.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 20, 2003, with a U.S.-led coalition invasion to overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein. The first major combat phase, characterized by rapid armored advances, lasted until early May 2003. White's death occurred during this period of high-intensity conventional warfare.
