U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Steven Wayne White, 29, of Lawton, Oklahoma, was killed in hostile action on August 13, 2003, in Tikrit, Iraq.

Their Story

Staff Sergeant Steven Wayne White was a 29-year-old soldier from Lawton, Oklahoma. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas, and deployed to Iraq in 2003.

On August 13, 2003, White was killed in Tikrit, a city north of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his convoy was ambushed. The attack reportedly involved small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

White's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. The initial phase of major combat operations had been declared over by May 2003, but a persistent insurgency against coalition forces and the new Iraqi government led to continued casualties.

The Pentagon announced White's death on August 15, 2003. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

White is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial at Fort Hood and on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' database. His unit, the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery, continued its deployment in Iraq following his death.
