Their Story
Raymond Loya White was a 22-year-old from Elwood, Indiana. He served as a Specialist (SPC) in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On November 12, 2004, White was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his patrol encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) while conducting combat operations.
White's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2004, the mission had shifted to counter-insurgency operations, with frequent IED attacks against coalition forces in and around Baghdad.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Indiana media. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
White is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is included on the 1st Cavalry Division's memorial at Fort Hood and in the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame.
