White, Nathan Dennis
U.S. Navy Lieutenant Nathan Dennis White, 30, of Mesa, Arizona, was killed in a hostile incident in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 2, 2003.
Their Story
Nathan Dennis White was a 30-year-old Lieutenant serving in the United States Navy. He was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 195 (VFA-195), known as the 'Dambusters,' which was forward-deployed to Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan, prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
On April 2, 2003, White was killed in Baghdad. According to U.S. military reports, he was part of a small contingent of sailors providing technical support at a captured Iraqi air base when the facility came under indirect fire, likely from enemy mortar or artillery. He was one of the first American service members to die in the Iraqi capital following its capture by coalition forces.
White's death occurred during the initial combat phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a U.S.-led invasion that began on March 19, 2003. The stated objective was to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, which were never found. The conflict would evolve into a protracted counterinsurgency and sectarian war.
White's death was reported by major news outlets at the time, including The Arizona Republic, which noted his local ties to Mesa. The Navy confirmed his death and his assignment to VFA-195, a squadron that flew F/A-18C Hornet aircraft from the USS Kitty Hawk during the invasion.
He is memorialized on the Navy Memorial's 'Roll of Honor' and is included in the official casualty lists for Operation Iraqi Freedom. His name appears on the Iraq War Memorial in Mesa, Arizona.
