Their Story
Doonewey Abines White was a 26-year-old soldier from Milpitas, California. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
White died on May 29, 2007, in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol. The incident occurred during a period of intense counterinsurgency operations in the region.
Operation Iraqi Freedom began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2007, the conflict had entered a phase marked by a surge of U.S. troops aimed at stabilizing the country and combating a resilient insurgency. Balad was a strategic location housing a major U.S. airbase and was a frequent site of attacks.
White's death was reported by several news outlets, including the San Jose Mercury News, which noted his California roots. He was one of at least 10 U.S. service members killed in Iraq on or around May 29, 2007, making it one of the deadlier periods of that year.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and is listed among the 4,418 American service members who died during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Public records indicate he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
