Their Story
Christopher Neal White was a 23-year-old Marine from Southport, North Carolina. He served as a Private First Class with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was based at Camp Pendleton, California, before deploying to Iraq.
On June 20, 2006, White was killed by hostile action in the city of Al Karmah, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The Department of Defense reported he died from wounds sustained during combat operations. Al Karmah was a known insurgent stronghold where U.S. forces frequently engaged in intense urban combat.
White's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2006, the war had entered a phase characterized by a persistent Sunni insurgency and sectarian violence, with Anbar province being a central battleground.
White was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. He was survived by his parents and a sister. His name is inscribed on Panel 8a, Row 46 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Shallotte, North Carolina, according to local records.
No specific individual awards or memorial foundations are widely documented in public sources. He is remembered among the more than 4,400 U.S. service members who died during the Iraq War.
