Mason Douglas Whetstone was a 30-year-old sergeant from Daytona Beach, Florida. He served in the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment, a unit assigned to V Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On July 17, 2003, Sgt. Whetstone was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his unit came under enemy fire. The incident occurred more than three months after the fall of the Iraqi capital to coalition forces.
Operation Iraqi Freedom was a U.S.-led military campaign that began with an invasion on March 19, 2003. The initial combat phase, which toppled the government of Saddam Hussein, was declared over by May 1, 2003. However, an insurgency against the coalition occupation and the new Iraqi government intensified throughout the summer of 2003, leading to continued combat operations.
Sgt. Whetstone's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. His name is listed on the Iraq War Memorial in Daytona Beach, Florida, which honors local residents who died in the conflict.
