First Lieutenant Alexander Edmund Wetherbee, 27, of Fairfax, Virginia, was a U.S. Marine killed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, on September 12, 2004.
Their Story
Alexander Edmund Wetherbee was a 27-year-old First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Company A, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was from Fairfax, Virginia.
On September 12, 2004, Wetherbee was killed by hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar Province. According to the Department of Defense, he died during a security and stability operation. The Marine Corps stated he was conducting a mounted patrol when his unit came under attack.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2004, the mission had shifted to counter-insurgency operations, with Al Anbar Province being a major center of resistance against coalition forces.
Wetherbee was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on Panel 1W, Line 124 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's memorial exhibition, which honors those killed in the wars that followed the 2001 attacks.
