Their Story

Marshall Alan Westbrook was a 43-year-old sergeant from Farmington, New Mexico. He served with the New Mexico Army National Guard's 126th Military Police Company, based in Albuquerque, which was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On October 1, 2005, Westbrook was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during a patrol. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the attack.

Westbrook's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgency in Iraq. The year 2005 saw a significant increase in the use of IEDs against coalition and Iraqi forces, making it one of the deadliest years of the war for U.S. troops.

His death was reported by local and national media. The governor of New Mexico at the time, Bill Richardson, ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor. Westbrook was survived by his wife and children.

He is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in Farmington and is listed on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America casualty roster. His unit, the 126th Military Police Company, was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service during the deployment.
