First Lieutenant Kile Grant West, 23, of Pasadena, Texas, died on May 28, 2007, in Abu Sayda, Iraq, while serving with the U.S. Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Kile Grant West was a 23-year-old First Lieutenant from Pasadena, Texas. He served with Troop A, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On May 28, 2007, West was killed in Abu Sayda, a town in Iraq's Diyala province northeast of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while on a dismounted patrol.

West's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity in Iraq. The years 2005-2007 were among the deadliest of the war for U.S. forces, with Diyala province being a significant area of operations against insurgent groups following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari shrine in Samarra.

West was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His name is inscribed on Panel 20E, Row 90 of the National Infantry Museum's Memorial Walk in Columbus, Georgia.

He is remembered by his family and community in Pasadena. A scholarship fund was reportedly established in his name at his alma mater, Sam Rayburn High School.
