Their Story

Jason Michael West was a 28-year-old U.S. Army captain from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, which was based in Friedberg, Germany, and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On July 24, 2006, Captain West was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in the city of Ar Ramadi, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, confirming he died from hostile action.

West's death occurred during a period of intense urban warfare and a Sunni-led insurgency in Anbar. The years 2005-2007 were the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, with Ar Ramadi serving as a major insurgent stronghold and the site of frequent, fierce engagements.

Following his death, Captain West was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His funeral was held in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

Captain West is memorialized on several veterans' memorials, including the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's online remembrance. His battalion continued operations in Ramadi for several more months as part of a broader coalition effort to secure the city.
