Christopher Jude Rivera Wesley was a 26-year-old from Portland, Oregon. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
On December 8, 2003, Wesley was killed in Ad Duluiyah, a city in Iraq's Salah ad Din province, approximately 45 miles north of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his patrol was attacked with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
Wesley's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2003, the mission had shifted from conventional warfare to a counterinsurgency campaign, with frequent attacks on coalition forces in central Iraq's Sunni Triangle region.
The Pentagon announced his death on December 10, 2003. He was reportedly survived by his mother, father, and a sister. His name is inscribed on Panel 13B, Line 124 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington.
He is remembered among the more than 4,400 U.S. service members who died during the conflict. His battalion, part of the 2nd Infantry Division, continued operations in Iraq for several more years.
