Their Story
Lonny Dion Wells was a 29-year-old sergeant from Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. He served with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California.
On November 9, 2004, Wells was killed during the Second Battle of Fallujah, a major U.S.-led offensive to retake the city from insurgent forces. He died from hostile fire while engaged in urban combat operations in the city.
The Second Battle of Fallujah, codenamed Operation Phantom Fury, began in November 2004 and was one of the fiercest urban engagements of the Iraq War. It followed an earlier, inconclusive siege in April 2004 and aimed to establish control over a city that had become an insurgent stronghold.
